How to Protect Your Rockwall Home from Mosquitoes This Summer

March 9, 2026 8 min read

If you live in Rockwall, Heath, or any community along Lake Ray Hubbard, you already know that mosquito season here is no joke. The combination of the lake, our clay-heavy soil that holds standing water after every rain, and North Texas heat from May through October creates ideal breeding conditions. We treat properties along the lake and throughout Rockwall County every week during peak season, and the number one thing we hear from homeowners is: 'We cannot even enjoy our backyard.'

Mosquitoes in North Texas are more than a nuisance. Rockwall County has reported West Nile virus-positive mosquito pools multiple years running, and the City of Rockwall conducts aerial spraying when case counts rise. But municipal spraying only does so much. The mosquitoes breeding in your yard, your neighbor's yard, and the drainage areas near your property are your problem to manage.

Why Rockwall Has Such Bad Mosquitoes

Not every city in North Texas has the same mosquito pressure. Rockwall sits in a uniquely bad spot for several reasons:

  • Lake Ray Hubbard — The lake itself does not breed many mosquitoes because wave action disrupts egg-laying. But the coves, marshy edges, drainage channels, and retention ponds around the lake are prime breeding habitat
  • Clay soil — North Texas clay soil does not drain well. After a summer thunderstorm, water pools in low spots across yards, construction sites, and natural areas for days, giving mosquitoes plenty of time to lay eggs
  • New construction — The rapid development around Rockwall, Heath, and Fate creates temporary puddles, ditches, and standing water in construction zones that are mosquito nurseries
  • Irrigation runoff — Overwatered lawns and gardens create standing water in drainage ditches, plant saucers, and low-lying areas of your yard

Where Mosquitoes Breed on Your Property

A female mosquito only needs a bottle cap's worth of standing water to lay 100 to 200 eggs, and those eggs hatch into flying adults in as little as seven days. When we inspect properties for mosquito breeding sources, here are the most common culprits we find:

  • Clogged gutters — By far the number one breeding source we see on Rockwall homes. Gutters that hold even a small amount of debris trap water after every rain
  • Plant saucers and flower pots — That saucer under your potted plant on the patio is a mosquito nursery
  • Bird baths — If you do not change the water at least twice a week, mosquitoes will use it
  • Kids' toys and outdoor equipment — Wagons, playhouse roofs, buckets, tire swings, and anything else that collects water
  • French drains and catch basins — These can hold stagnant water, especially if they are not draining properly
  • Tarps over boats, grills, or equipment — Tarps that sag and hold water are some of the worst breeding sites we see
  • Tree holes and stumps — Natural depressions in trees collect rainwater that mosquitoes love
  • Air conditioning drip lines — The condensation line from your AC unit can create a consistently wet area that breeds mosquitoes if it drains into a low spot

Walk your property once a week and dump, drain, or flip anything that holds water. This single habit eliminates more mosquitoes than any spray on the market.

What Actually Works for Mosquito Control

There is a lot of misinformation about mosquito control. Citronella candles, ultrasonic devices, and those propane mosquito magnets you see at the hardware store provide minimal relief at best. Here is what we have seen actually make a difference on properties we treat:

Source Reduction

Eliminating standing water is the single most effective mosquito control method. You cannot spray your way out of a problem if your yard is producing thousands of new mosquitoes every week. Fix drainage issues, clean gutters, and eliminate every source of standing water you can find.

Professional Barrier Treatment

A professional mosquito barrier treatment applies a residual product to the shaded resting areas where adult mosquitoes spend most of their time — the undersides of leaves, shrubs, under decks, along fence lines, and in ground cover. When mosquitoes land on these treated surfaces, they pick up the product and die. We treat properties on a recurring schedule from April through October because the product breaks down over time, especially in North Texas heat.

Larvicide for Standing Water You Cannot Eliminate

Some standing water sources cannot be eliminated — drainage ditches, retention ponds, ornamental ponds. In these cases, we use larvicide products that prevent mosquito larvae from developing into adults. These are safe for fish, pets, and wildlife when used correctly.

Mosquito Control Myths

  • Bug zappers kill mosquitoes — Bug zappers primarily attract and kill beneficial insects like moths and beetles. Studies show they kill very few mosquitoes because mosquitoes are attracted to CO2 and body heat, not UV light
  • Citronella keeps mosquitoes away — Citronella provides minimal, short-range repellency. In a backyard with real mosquito pressure, a citronella candle will not make a noticeable difference
  • Bats and purple martin houses solve mosquito problems — While bats and purple martins eat some mosquitoes, studies show mosquitoes make up less than 1% of their diet. They prefer larger, easier-to-catch insects
  • Garlic spray repels mosquitoes — There is no scientific evidence that spraying garlic around your yard provides meaningful mosquito control

Protecting Your Family from Mosquito-Borne Illness

West Nile virus is the primary mosquito-borne disease risk in North Texas. Most people who contract West Nile have mild or no symptoms, but roughly 1 in 150 infected people develop serious neurological illness. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk. Rockwall County typically sees its first positive mosquito trap results in June or July, with peak risk in August and September.

  • Apply EPA-registered repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when spending time outdoors during dawn and dusk
  • Wear long sleeves and pants during peak mosquito hours if possible
  • Make sure window and door screens are in good repair with no gaps or holes
  • Run fans on your patio — mosquitoes are weak fliers and even a moderate breeze disrupts their ability to land on you

Our Mosquito Treatment Program

Action Pest Solutions offers recurring mosquito barrier treatments from April through October for homes throughout Rockwall, Heath, Fate, Rowlett, and the surrounding communities. We treat every three to four weeks, targeting the areas where mosquitoes rest during the day. Most of our customers report a dramatic reduction in mosquito activity after the first treatment, and by the second treatment, they are actually using their backyards again.
