Wasp and Bee Nest Removal in Rockwall: When to Call a Pro

March 9, 2026 8 min read

Stinging insects send more people to the emergency room than any other type of pest. In North Texas, wasp and bee activity ramps up in spring, peaks during summer, and does not fully subside until the first hard freeze — which sometimes does not come until December in Rockwall County. We remove wasp and bee nests from homes, playgrounds, pool areas, and commercial properties throughout the area, and the most important thing we can tell you is: know what you are dealing with before you do anything.

Identifying Stinging Insects Around Your Home

The approach to a wasp nest versus a bee colony is completely different, and misidentification can lead to unnecessary stings, property damage, or the loss of beneficial pollinators. Here is what you are most likely seeing in the Rockwall area:

Paper Wasps

Paper wasps are the most common stinging insect we deal with in North Texas. They build small, open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, porch ceilings, deck railings, fence caps, and playground equipment. The nests are gray and papery, and you can see the individual cells. A typical nest has 20 to 75 wasps. Paper wasps are generally not aggressive unless you disturb the nest, but their stings are painful and they can sting multiple times.

Red Wasps (a type of paper wasp)

Red wasps are larger and more brightly colored than common paper wasps, and they are everywhere in Rockwall. They build the same umbrella-shaped nests in the same locations. Red wasps are slightly more defensive than other paper wasps, and their sting is notably painful. They are one of the most common reasons homeowners in our area call for stinging insect removal.

Yellow Jackets

Yellow jackets are more aggressive than paper wasps and often build nests underground, in wall voids, or in hollow trees. A mature yellow jacket colony can have thousands of workers. They are attracted to food and sugary drinks at outdoor gatherings, and they become increasingly aggressive in late summer and fall as the colony reaches its peak size. Ground nests are particularly dangerous because people often step on them or disturb them while mowing.

Mud Daubers

Mud daubers build small, tube-shaped nests out of mud on walls, under eaves, and in garages. Unlike paper wasps and yellow jackets, mud daubers are solitary and rarely sting. They actually help control spider populations. We generally recommend leaving mud daubers alone unless the nests are in a high-traffic area.

Honeybees

Honeybees are not wasps and should be handled differently. If you see a large cluster of bees hanging from a tree branch, that is a swarm — a group of bees looking for a new home. Swarms are temporary and typically move on within 24 to 72 hours. If bees have moved into a wall void, soffit, or other structure on your home, they are establishing a colony, and you will need professional removal.

Important: Honeybees are critical pollinators. If you have a honeybee colony on your property, we recommend contacting a local beekeeper for live removal before considering extermination. We can refer you to beekeepers in the Rockwall area who do removals.

When You Can Handle It Yourself

Small paper wasp nests — those with fewer than 20 wasps — can sometimes be handled safely with a long-range wasp spray (the kind that shoots 15 to 20 feet) if:

  • You are not allergic to stings and have no history of severe reactions
  • The nest is small and newly established (smaller than a golf ball to tennis ball)
  • The nest is accessible without a ladder — never use a ladder to spray a wasp nest, because a sting can cause you to fall
  • The nest is not near a door, window, or area where people pass frequently
  • You spray at dusk or dawn when wasps are less active and most of the colony is on the nest

When to Call a Professional

Call a professional for removal in these situations:

  • Anyone in your household is allergic to stings — Even a single sting can trigger anaphylaxis in allergic individuals. Do not take the risk
  • The nest is large — Paper wasp nests larger than a fist, or any yellow jacket nest, should be handled by a professional
  • The nest is in a wall void, soffit, or enclosed space — Treating enclosed nests requires specialized equipment and approach. Sealing the entry hole will not kill the colony; they will chew a new exit, often into your living space
  • You cannot see the nest — If you hear buzzing in a wall or see wasps entering a gap but cannot see the nest, do not attempt DIY treatment
  • The nest is near a pool, playground, or high-traffic area — The risk of multiple stings to family members or guests is too high
  • It is a yellow jacket ground nest — Ground nests can contain thousands of aggressive wasps. Disturbing one triggers a mass attack
  • You are dealing with honeybees — Live bee removal requires specialized equipment and experience

What to Do If You Get Stung

  • Move away from the nest quickly — Wasps release alarm pheromones when they sting, which attracts other wasps to attack
  • Remove the stinger if present (honeybees leave stingers; wasps do not) by scraping sideways with a credit card. Do not squeeze with tweezers as this can inject more venom
  • Apply ice to reduce swelling and take an antihistamine for itching
  • Watch for signs of severe allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or hives spreading away from the sting site. Call 911 immediately if any of these occur
  • If you know you are allergic, always carry an EpiPen when spending time outdoors during stinging insect season

Preventing Wasp Nests Around Your Home

  • Inspect your home's eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, and fence caps in early spring (March) for new nest construction. Early-stage nests with just the queen can be knocked down with a broom before workers are present
  • Seal gaps and cracks in siding, soffits, and around rooflines where wasps might enter wall voids
  • Keep trash cans sealed — Yellow jackets are attracted to protein and sugar in garbage
  • Do not leave sweet drinks or food uncovered at outdoor gatherings
  • Consider a preventive treatment in early spring — We treat eaves, soffits, and common nesting areas with a residual product that deters wasps from building for several months
